Yuma Transition
Yuma Transition
Mon, Nov. 4th, 2024
Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
As the coastal California growing season concludes, temperature fluctuations are expected to continue. A significant rain event is forecasted for the weekend, bringing rain and strong winds to the Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys, along with cooler temperatures, which may adversely affect remaining crops.
Transition supplies are anticipated to be extremely tight through November due to extended warm temperatures in Yuma. These conditions can lead to heat-related defects in leafy greens, such as weak tips, irregular shapes, and increased seeding.
In Salinas, broccoli has been particularly impacted by heat and insect issues, while iceberg and romaine face challenges from mildew and pests, resulting in poor quality and premature pinking during transit and storage. Processed leafy greens will also likely show increased discoloration and reduced shelf life due to weather conditions.
Yuma will start light harvests next week, with full production expected by mid-November. Early harvests typically have lighter carton weights and may experience seeding issues.

Thanks,
