Green Onion Market Update
Green Onion Market Update
Wed, August 17th, 2022
Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
Over the last few weeks, the green onion supply has tightened up significantly as the extreme high heat during the planting and growing season has been much worse than in normal years. Furthermore, growers are seeing more severe field loss than was originally forecasted. This is due to the abnormally high temperatures this May, June, and July when temperatures were as high as 103 to 115 degrees.
This growing loss is hurting the plantings that growers are currently harvesting and projected to harvest through August and September. In addition, fewer growers are planting during the summer months and others have reduced acreage over pandemic concerns and ballooning costs, which also contributes to the shortages. Supply is forecasted to be down 25-35%, with some shippers reporting supply to be down as much as 40%-50% from the original projected harvest volumes.
Additionally, the rain and heat in other local growing areas such as Ohio Valley and Canada is creating loss as well, which is causing additional pressure and demand on green onions.
