Green Onions/ Hurricane Hilary

Green Onions/ Hurricane Hilary

Tues, August 22nd, 2023

Dear Ole Tyme Customers:

UPDATE: The heat over the last eight weeks in the Mexicali area has started to cause quality and supply issues on Green Onions. Although Hurricane Hilary caused extreme windy conditions and rain, supplies of Green Onions were mainly affected by the recent and current heat. This heat (ranging from 105 – 113 degrees) will remain in the Mexicali region for at least the next couple of weeks. The heat and humidity more than Hurricane Hilary will cause damage to the crop the next few weeks. Hurricane Hilary has caused downed power lines along with about 80% of the Mexicali region without power. Most green onion sheds continue to be without power and are hoping the power comes back on later today. If you can source extra Green Onions in your local market during this time it would be a great idea.

  • The increased heat in Mexicali and recent rain and wind from Hurricane Hilary will cause a major shortage in supplies.
  • Currently Green Onions that are growing are maturing too quickly and are leading to various quality issues (crooked shanks/excess peeling around the root) causing lower yields.
  • The heat/ground temps have kept the production season ahead of schedule and has caused a supply gap this week. This heat will also cause quality issues the next few weeks.
  • The market continues to go up as supplies are being hit by these extreme temps.
  • Expect supplies to be extremely tight the next 3-4 weeks. Suppliers will struggle to cover averages.
