Lettuce & Broccoli

Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
The high-pressure system over the Southwestern Desert is moving east, following several days of extreme heat, which has caused several challenges for crops in the region.
Desert Regions (Southwestern Desert):
- Lettuce and Leaf Crops: Increased issues like fringe/tip burn, internal burn, twisted or irregular shapes, and seeders. These problems result in weaker, dehydrated texture and reduced shelf life. Premature pinking along the rib is becoming noticeable during transit and storage.
- Broccoli: Open or yellow beads, dehydration, and higher insect pressure are appearing in broccoli production.
- Processed Crops: Heat is causing physiological changes, leading to more mechanical damage, bruising during harvest, and an increase in discoloration and breakdown during processing, impacting quality and shelf life.
Central California (Salinas, Huron, Santa Maria):
- Harvests are light but will pick up next week.
- Cool temperatures and storms may delay field preparation and harvests, increasing the risk of mold, mildew, and disease pressure on crops.
