Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
- California Weather:
- Coastal growing regions will see seasonal temperatures mid-week.
- Imperial and Yuma Desert areas will remain 10-15 degrees above normal.
- Highs in the lower 100s and lows in the 70s expected to persist.
- Impact on Salinas Valley:
- Recent heat has damaged crops, especially iceberg, romaine, and leafy greens.
- Increased heat-related defects (fringe/internal burn, irregular shapes).
- Weaker texture and reduced shelf life noted.
- Mildew and disease pressures are affecting production quality.
- Insect pressures, particularly from diamondback moth larvae, remain a concern.
- Processing Effects:
- Extreme heat may lead to physiological changes in plants.
- Increased mechanical damage and bruising during harvest and processing.
- Processed leafy greens may show discoloration and breakdown, affecting shelf life.
- Spinach, spring mix, and tender baby leaves are particularly susceptible.
- Hurricane Milton:
- Florida is preparing for Hurricane Milton, expected to land as a category 4 or strong category 3.
- Central Florida will be most affected, with widespread impacts across the Southeast.
- Many farmers delayed planting of various crops following Hurricane Helene.
- Concerns over existing crops, such as iceberg, romaine, and cabbage, already in the ground.
- Growers are bracing for impacts and will assess damage post-storm.
