Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
STRAWBERRIES:
- Salinas /Watsonville: We continue to see a decline in volume out of these areas as growers near the end of their Summer planting cycles. The recent heat has further reduced yields as crews are working more slowly to keep the damaged product out of the pack.
- Santa Maria: New crop fruit has begun. Initial offerings are light. Numbers will slowly increase week over week out of this area
Markets Demand exceeds supply with a heavy increase in school and food service business coupled with Labor day demand.
BLUEBERRIES: The Pacific Northwest is ending earlier than expected for many growers. Recent high temperatures followed by moderate to heavy rains in the growing areas of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia have limited any future harvests. This will cause a gap in production over the next three to four weeks.
- Cmex and Peru are expected to pick up in volume in late September /early October.
- Market: prices will increase over the next two weeks. Availability is very limited and will remain so until late September /early October.
BLACKBERRIES: This item continues to be tight with limited open market availability. We expect volume to rebound a bit in early to mid-September.
- Market: with most shippers concentrating on contract coverage only.
RASPBERRIES: Baja and Central Mexico volumes have tapered off as growers move to new field locations in these areas.
- Market: availability is still adequate for the current demand.
