Mixed Berry Heat Alert
Mixed Berry Heat Alert
Fri, Oct 6th, 2023
Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
We are experiencing very high temperatures in Salinas and Watsonville with some inland temps reaching the 100-degree range. Santa Maria and Oxnard will be affected similarly. This event will be brief starting on 10/5 and lasting through 10/7. This short period of heat this late in the growing season in Watsonville and Salinas will adversely affect all berry quality across the board. Many of the raspberry and blackberry bushes are under hoops which intensifies the temperatures by several degrees. Santa Mara and Oxnard may fare better through this event due to the earlier plant cycles in that area.
- We expect nighttime lows to be in the high 50s which will not allow the plants to rest properly after the heat of the day. This will produce some overripe soft fruit.
- Fields in the coastal regions will be less affected than ranches situated farther inland. This applies to all growing regions both north and south.
- We will see a cooling trend beginning Monday.
