Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
We continue to face a significant supply shortage in the strawberry market, with very limited availability of open-market products. Here’s a regional update:
- Santa Maria: Yields are declining as the season nears its end.
- Oxnard: Colder temperatures and shorter days are slowing plant maturation and reducing harvest yields. This region is seeing issues like white shoulders and inconsistent sizing.
- Central Mexico: Production is gradually increasing week over week, but cooler rejections at the border due to quality concerns have further tightened supply. Current quality issues include white shoulders and softer skin, though gradual improvement is expected in the coming weeks.
- Florida: The season is just starting in the Doral and Plant City areas with very light yields. Production is expected to ramp up as weather conditions improve, but full production isn’t anticipated until the end of the month.
Market Update: Prices remain high, ranging from $30.00 to $34.00. The industry-wide shortage has led to orders being pushed forward and partial fill rates. Appointment slots are filling quickly—early scheduling is strongly recommended.
